OUR MISSION

ACTIVATING POSITIVE CHANGE THROUGH DESIGN

We are PASSIONATE ABOUT finding and designing the best tools to help transform the way we design goods and services so that we create a regenerative and circular economy by design.

To enable this, we take take on commissions for developing new works that we believe will have true impact. We also do high-level collaborations and create self-initiated projects. We are committed to equitable access to our content, so we give away a minimum of 20% of all our content for free.

Designing positive change is our business.

LET US HELP YOU MAKE IT YOURS TOO.

Disrupt Design is forging new ways of using design as a catalyst for creative interventions to help make the critical transition to a circular and more sustainable economy. We are at the forefront of developing and using design tools to positively impact the planet, so that we can redesign the now for a future that works better for everyone. We build unique experiences that transform the capacity for organizations and individuals to be an active part of the new circular, sustainable and green economy.

Change and innovation are best formed through understanding your community and the products, patterns, actions and motivations of those within it. With a mix of sociological methodologies, systems thinking tools and design approaches, our approach explores, unpacks, evaluates and presents opportunities for enacting positive change.

Design is a powerful cultural and creative force used to shape and influence society.

It has, for as long as humans have been standing on two legs, influenced every moment of our lives. From the way we sit to the structure of society, everything in the material and social world is designed, and we are here to help everyone willing to design it more sustainably. Our tools use design to help transform the way we design products, services and systems that make up society.

I started Disrupt Design as a vehicle to help activate the global design and business community to take on the incredible opportunity that sustainability offers us by sharing the tools and techniques needed to transition to a sustainable, regenerative and circular economy, by design.

WE WORK WITH PIONEERS OF CHANGE

OUR COLLABORATORS AND CLIENTS ARE helping to PIONEER change toward a circular and SUSTAINABLE future in INDUSTRY, GOVERNMENT and society.

THEY KNOW THE FUTURE IS SUSTAINABLE, POSITIVE, REGENERATIVE AND CIRCULAR, AND THEY WANT THE best TOOLS, KNOW HOW AND ORGANIzATIONAL CULTURE TO BE LEADERS OF POSITIVE CHANGE.

LEAD CREATIVES

Disrupt works with a small but mighty international team of designers, creatives, researchers, academics, scientists, renegades, filmmakers and others forward thinkers who are interested in making positive social and environmental change. We bring in teams according to the project and curate specializations that are best suited to effect change. Disrupt’s lead creatives are sustainability (and founder) Leyla Acaroglu and creative director, sustainable designer and illustrator Emma Segal.

THE DISRUPTIVE DESIGN METHOD

At Disrupt, we use the Disruptive Design approach for all our workshops, projects and interventions, and we also teach the methodology through our educational initiative, The UnSchool of Disruptive Design.

Using a unique multi-disciplinary approach that combines expertise from design thinking, sociology, environmental sciences, cognitive sciences and systems thinking, our products and services transfer the knowledge and skills to use our highly productive methods and tools.

Developed by the Disrupt Design founder, Dr. Leyla Acaroglu, the applied method involves three key phases: Mining, Landscaping and Building. Combined, these are used as approaches for inquiry, discovery, and development in addressing complex real-world problems.

The method is based off a more in-depth 12-part methodology of several creative changemaking and science disciplines.

THE 12 PARTS OF THE DISRUPT DESIGN METHODOLOGY

disruptive design method sustainability

SUSTAINABILITY
Explore approaches to integrating sustainability into decision making and tools such as life cycle thinking to help understand environmental and social impact.

disruptive design method systems thinking

SYSTEMS THINKING
Develop methods and approaches needed to map relationships and system dynamics, and see how they play out in a variety of different problem arenas.

disruptive design method making change

MAKING CHANGE
Explore contemporary theories of change, modes in which one can intervene in change, and discover how to critically evaluate the ways change happens on macro and micro levels.

disruptive design method research strategies

RESEARCH STRATEGIES
Critically investigate approaches to conducting research and collecting information for greater insight. We learn that research is experimentation in action. Apply action research and responsive feedback loops to develop creative solutions.

disruptive design method gamification

GAMIFICATION + GAME THEORY
Unpack the modes in which play and game theory effect and motivate action. Look at the bigger picture of games and gamification and the ways in which they can be used to effect change while unpacking intrinsic motivators such as pleasure, success and challenge.

disruptive design method cognitive biases

COGNITIVE SCIENCE + BIASES
Investigate the latest in cognitive sciences, neurochemical influences, body connections, cognitive biases and social influencers. Learn how cognitive experiences and biases influence perceptions and actions.

disruptive design method ethics and empathy

ETHICS + EMPATHY
Explore the physiological and social experiences of empathy and how one can employ empathetic approaches to design. The critical role of ethics in decision making and action is also explored.

disruptive design method language influence effect

LANGUAGE, INFLUENCE + EFFECT
Explore systems of language, the history of framing, moral panics and discourse, semantics and semiotics. Gain an understanding of the social construction of influential communication and how to apply tactics to shift behaviors toward sustainable practices.

disruptive design method systems interventions

SYSTEMS INTERVENTIONS
The synthesis of all the components come together. Here we identify and build systems interventions, as well as design the vehicles in which these interventions can exist.  Discover how to use a Theory of Change to plan out tactical interventions.

disruptive design method ideation and prototyping

IDEATION + PROTOTYPING
Learn our rules of ideation and rapid creative development. Test ways of translating ideas into outcomes through prototyping in a variety of forms and formats.

disruptive design method sustainable design production

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN + PRODUCTION
Implement eco-design and sustainable production practices in your work. Think through production and project evolution to build more sustainable solutions into the design of products, systems and services.

disruptive design method project activation amplification

PROJECT ACTIVATION + AMPLIFICATION
Implement, amplify and activate interventions. Explore ways of putting things into the world, considering how they may evolve and develop contingency plans that allow for flexible, rapid adaptation.

OUR CLIENTS & COLLABORATORS FOR ACTIVATING POSITIVE CHANGE

We have worked with loads of organizations, especially ones with acronyms like TED, IDEO, AIGA, UN, along with a bunch that have normal names, too.  We work with small to massive organizations, all with the unifying desire to turn what they do into something better, more positive and sustainable. We work closely with executives and CEOs. as well as Human Resource and Sustainability Managers. If you want to make change, we are here to help.
