DISRUPT DESIGN IS THE HOME OF THE DISRUPTIVE DESIGN METHOD

The Disruptive Design METHOD is a UNIQUE approach to understanding, evolving and solving complex SUSTAINABILITY problems BY DESIGN

At Disrupt Design, we developed and use the Disruptive Design Method (DDM) for all our workshops, commissions, projects and interventions. We teach the full methodology through our educational initiative, The UnSchool of Disruptive Design.

Using a unique multi-disciplinary approach that combines expertise from design thinking, sociology, environmental sciences, cognitive sciences, behavioral economics and systems thinking, our approach transfers knowledge and skills needed to apply productive boundary-pushing outcomes for activating sustainability and designing solutions for the circular economy.

DECADE OF DISRUPTION: FUTURE OF WORKPLACE SUSTAINABILITY

A FREE REPORT COMMISSIONED BY UNILY

How will disruptions like Covid-19 and Climate Change affect the way we work? What will accelerate the move towards sustainability? We answer this question in our new report.

THE THREE STAGES OF THE DISRUPTIVE DESIGN METHOD

MINING, LANDSCAPING AND BUILDING

Developed by Disrupt Design founder and UNEP Champion of the Earth Dr. Leyla Acaroglu, the applied DDM involves three key phases of Mining, Landscaping and Building. Combined, these are used as approaches for inquiry, discovery and development in addressing complex real-world problems. The method is based off a more in-depth 12-part methodology of several changemaking, creative and science-based disciplines.  Read more on the full methodology here.

MINING

The initial deep dive into becoming a problem lover, here we take on a mindset of curiosity and exploration. In the Mining phase, we do deep participatory and action research, suspend the need to solve, avoid trying to impose order, and embrace the chaos of any complex system.

LANDSCAPING

The mindset of connection and relationships, here is where we see the world as a giant jigsaw puzzle to create a different perspective that enables a bird’s eye view of the system. Insights are gathered and areas of systems intervention are identified to enable the design of systems change.

BUILDING

The creative phase for the development of divergent design ideas that leverage change within your sphere of influence, here the goal is to evolve the problem arena so that the status quo is shifted with a diversity of ideation and prototyping tools to move through a design process.

WE USE THE THREE PILLARS OF CREATIVE CHANGEMAKING

SYSTEMS, SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN

All Disrupt Design projects focus on advancing and leveraging positive social and environmental change. We base all our work on a systems thinking approach, employ sustainability sciences and develop design solutions to create unique and evocative outcomes that fit the problem arena we are working to effect change within.

The combination of these approaches enables us to create outcomes unlike any other. We have been commissioned by international organizations such as the United Nations Environment Programme, developed learning systems for Finland and Thailand, and worked with multi-national companies to advance sustainability.

THE CIRCULAR

CLASSROOM

A FREE TOOLKIT FOR ADVANCING THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Commissioned and developed for Finnish high schools, this project was co-designed with teachers and students and then offered in three languages. All content is open source, and it is available to any individual or organization to use for educational purposes.

AWARD WINNING

WORLD-LEADING CHANGE

Founder of Disrupt Design Dr. Leyla Acaroglu is one of the world’s leading proponents of design-led systems change. She has written extensively on the tools for designing change and pioneered the systems-based approach of the DDM. Leyla has a unique way of taking complex problems and turning them into highly-engaging narratives about how to redesign the world. She was recognized for her work in advancing sustainable design and innovation by the United Nations, as she was awarded the prestigious Champion of the Earth laureate position in 2016. She has won numerous awards for her work and is highly sought out for her unique approach to sustainability and activating change.
